John Cale on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' on Jan. 10, 2013.

The album many credit with birthing alternative rock came to life over the weekend at a special collaborative concert in Paris. Every track of the Velvet Underground’s 1967 classic The Velvet Underground & Nico was performed by former band member John Cale, along with a diverse cast of generation-spanning musicians.

At the Philharmonie de Paris yesterday (April 3) Cale was joined by the likes of Animal Collective, the Libertines' Pete Doherty and Carl Barat, Mark Lanegan, Lou Doillon and Etienne Daho. They performed all of the Velvets’ debut LP, in addition to some songs from its follow-up, White Light/White Heat.

To celebrate the album’s upcoming 50th anniversary, the Philharmonie also hosted a Velvet Underground exhibition.

Lou Reed passed away in 2013, leaving Cale and Moe Tucker as the band’s only living members from the Velvet Underground & Nico period.
