Also, frontman Claudio Sanchez discusses the inspiration behind new album 'The Color Before the Sun.'

It’s a new day for modern prog rock titans Coheed and Cambria. Their brand new studio album The Color Before the Sun (out Oct. 16) found frontman Claudio Sanchez leaving sci-fi concepts behind and writing about himself for the first time in years. And they’re about to take it all on the road -- starting Feb. 22 in Boston’s House of Blues, Coheed will embark on a 24-date U.S. tour.

The trek includes stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, and the Hollywood Palladium. Check the bottom of the article for the complete itinerary.

That being said, you don’t get to see these guys play a tiny club often, and we’ve also got the exclusive premiere of Claudio Sanchez and company rocking their new song “You Got Spirit, Kid” at Brooklyn’s St. Vitus on Oct. 9. What’s it like to watch them at a 350-capacity venue? Check out the video below, premiering exclusively via Billboard:

“We were in New York for New York Comic Con and we wanted to put together a live show that was super intimate,” Sanchez tells Billboard. “The record was coming out the following week, and we wanted to get people together to see us live in a setting that is not typical of Coheed and Cambria.”

Indeed it isn’t. Sanchez expands on the meaning of the song: “(‘You Got Spirit, Kid’) is really about accepting problems, because everyone has them, and then moving forward. These are the things that makes us who we are. So I suppose it’s a song about every one of us.”

The Coheed frontman didn’t consciously set out to write about himself more, but due to changes in setting and his personal life. “It was something that revealed itself when The Color Before the Sun was finished,” he says. “For me, becoming a father was so important, and at this stage in my life, I felt confident enough to write about these things without the concept in front of it. The New Jersey native was living in a new place -- in Park Slope, Brooklyn -- and that effected the creative process, too: “I felt exposed in the sense that I knew my neighbors could hear me, and I feel most creative early in the morning. I guess that was the most challenging part of the writing process this time around.”

The Color Before the Sun debuted at No. 1 (for the week dated Nov. 7) on the Top Rock Albums chart, the Alternative Albums chart, and the Hard Rock Albums chart. It clocked in at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with a first-week sales total of 31,000. 3,000 of those copies were on wax, giving Coheed a No. 2 debut on the Vinyl Albums chart.
