It's been a long time coming for Canadian genre-blending rockers Young Empires. They formed in 2009 and have no full-length album to their name, but that's about to change.

Debut album The Gates is set to drop Sept. 4 on Votiv Music/Pirates Blend Records, and Billboard has an exclusive early listen of its dramatic closing song. Check it out below:

Bassist Jake Palahnuk promised more struggle on this album, as the band members have aged out of their twenties and the more innocent 2012 EP Wake All My Youth fades further into the rearview. Speaking to Billboard about this new track, the band echoed that sentiment:

"'Uncover You Eyes' was the last song written on our debut album The Gates. The song is about personal demons and looking within one's self to overcome internal struggles and challenges. The idea of shutting and opening 'eyes' is symbolic of this. 'Eyes' are the gateway to the soul, so they say."

Billboard Hot 100 Fest: Daily Lineup Revealed

"I know there's pain I caused and mistakes I made," vocalist Matthew Vlahovich admits in the lyrics, "But I can't change the past or my troubled ways." In the chorus, he admits to being his own worst enemy as the drums march skyward and the dramatic backing vocals kick in. Live and learn!
