Hunter Hunted are the L.A.-based indie duo comprised of Michael Garner (keyboards, ukulele, vocals) and Dan Chang (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals). They are preparing for the release of their debut album Ready For You, which arrives on July 10, and their first co-headlining tour with Young Rising Sons. Below, check out the exclusive premiere of the album's title track.

Dan Chang, the oldest of four, whose parents immigrated to Los Angeles from Taiwan was sheltered from popular music during his childhood. His mother played the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack on repeat in the car when he was young, which has had a lasting effect. Chang still has an affinity for Broadway citing Les Miserables and the Rent soundtrack as his huge influences. “People make fun of me because I didn’t start listening to The Beatles until college, I was like, ‘Who are these guys? (laughs)’,” he explains. “I was a freshman in college and people were looking at me like, ‘Who are you and where did you come from?’” Chang added the Broadway influences still resonate. “My approach to music is very melodic, we are always searching for catchy melodies and build more complex chord structure behind that.”

Garner cites the music from the mid-90’s as a major influence, including Third Eye Blind, Oasis, Sublime and Weezer’s 1994 debut album, but quickly notes his favorite songwriter is Paul Simon. “Listening to Simon & Garfunkel was a big influence seeing how this dual vocal thing can really bring beauty and harmonies.” His love of great vocals is prevalent on the group’s debut, where Garner and Chang share lead vocal duties harmonizing on the majority of the record. “The balance is not because we’re afraid to commit one way or the other,” explains Garner. “Dan has a high voice and I have a low voice. We don’t like singing alone. We like to sing together and collectively the voice is somewhere between raspy and pure.”

Garner and Chang first met in 2005 when they joined a collegiate a cappella singing group at UCLA. They hit it off and formed the band Lady Danville. After that group dissolved, Garner and Chang kept making music together. Hunter Hunted was born in 2012 and their self-titled EP was released in 2013. Over the past two years, they have opened for the likes of Fitz & the Tantrums, Weezer, Twenty One Pilots and Fun. before squeezing in time to write and record their debut album.

Ready For You, is rampant with melodic pop songs colored with tinges of rock and dance influences with catchy vocal harmonies. “We’re not going to be in a genre that is associated with a lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean we’re not excited about EDM music and where that is and how that’s being incorporated [in our music],” Garner says. “Right now is an exciting time to find what we’re excited about in each different genre and kind of meld that together.”

The band’s first single off their debut album is the huge power pop anthem “Blindside,” which Chang said is “not meant to be a positive or a negative statement.” He explains, “It’s when something takes you completely by surprise and now how do you react moving forward.”

Hunter Hunted will kick off their co-headlining tour with Young Rising Sons on July 13 at The Roxy in Los Angeles, Calif.Their debut album Ready For You will be released on July 10.
