Robert Trujillo and James Hetfield of Metallica perform onstage during Rock in Rio USA at the MGM Resorts Festival Grounds on May 9, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Back on Dec 8, 1997, Metallica played the Reload epic "The Unforgiven II" on the Billboard Music Awards. It took them 17 years to play it again, when they brought it out at Gelsenkirchen, Germany's Rock Im Revier festival on May 29.

For the diehards, the band captured the whole thing on audio and posted it to its official Soundcloud page. Check it out below:

Since then, according to Metallica's official site, the band has played it a third time (on May 31 in Munich), so perhaps it'll become a more regular occurrence.

The track was written as a sequel to "The Unforgiven," from Metallica's 1991 self-titled behemoth.

The band has hinted it's back in the studio working on its new album; in the meantime, Metallica has U.S. and European dates linked up through Aug. 30, including a stop at Lollapalooza.
