Exclusive: Watch the Tedeschi Trucks Band Perform Their Scorching Song 'Made Up Mind' Live in France
Derek Trucks says there's a palpably different spirit in the Tedeschi Trucks Band he leads with is wife, Susan Tedeschi, now that he's free and clear of any other obligations -- particularly the Allman Brothers Band, which he left after last October's final concerts at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
"I think the last two or three months is the first time it's really felt that way," the guitarist tells Billboard. "I guess the last 15 years or so it's been two or three months at a time, then you kind of switch gears and do something else. So it took a minute for it to register that you're not switching gears anymore. You get to focus in and really grind something out with this band, which feels really nice. It just feels more like a solid band now. I mean, everybody's always put everything they had into it, but I think everybody feels safer now just plowing full-steam ahead. It has to throw you a little bit when you're charging down the road and then one of the co-leaders is off for two or three months at a time doing other things. So it's nice now to be able to point the bus in one direction and just roll."
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is indeed rolling: The group is on the road into the summer, with stops at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on April 24, the Snowmass Mammoth Festival on June 14 in Colorado, the Rochester International Jazz Festival on June 24 in New York state and the Gathering of the Vibes festival on July 31 in Connecticut. Starting June 5 the TTB will also be joining forces with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings as well as singer-songwriter Doyle Bramhall for a summer tour together. "I've always been a fan of theirs," Trucks says. "A lot of guys in our band know a lot of people in that crew, but we haven't really run across them that closely. When we're thinking about putting a tour together, there's a short list of people we would really want to tour with, and they were high on our list. There's a lot of possibilities for good musical connections, so I'm excited to see what happens."
Watch band perform their song "Made Up Mind" live in Vienne, France, which Billboard is exclusively premiering.
When the TTB's not touring, Trucks says, the group has been working on its third studio album, the follow-up to 2013's Made Up Mind. Trucks says the group has worked up nearly 15 songs in his and Tedeschi's home studio in Georgia, although he expects just 10 of them to make the finished album. "I feel like it's a 10-song record," he says. "It's right around an hour. I feel like that's a lot of music for a record." He adds that there's "little things we want to add and upgrade," with hopes of finishing during the summer for release late this year or in early 2016.
"It's really a band record this time," Trucks says, adding that Bramhall was "thrown into the mix quite a bit" during the sessions. "I think we're getting braver in the studio, experimenting with sounds, and just kind of turning the band loose and letting it do just what it does naturally. Everyone's throwing in ideas and you can definitely feel the pride inside the band. I think everybody feels like it's being kind of birthed from the band and not just the band playing on songs (Tedeschi) and I brought in. They put a lot into the last two, but this one definitely feels a bit different. I'm really excited about it."
