Hello, "Mr. Perfectly Fine" -- who might you be?

Taylor Swift's surprise offering "From the Vault" just days before she releases Fearless (Taylor's Version) on Friday might have been part of a larger Easter egg scavenger hunt for the track list, but the pop superstar is keeping the clues coming.

The biggest question on fans' minds: Since Swift's songs were largely autobiographical in the Fearless days, just who is "Mr. Perfectly Fine"? Below, we break down the leading fan theories.

Billboard Explains: Why Taylor Swift is Re-Recording Her Old Albums

Joe Jonas

The Fearless-era tale of romantic woe was written in 2008 about a man who says all the right things at the right time, before she gets to know "Mr. Change of heart" right before he breaks hers. A few of Swift's A-list exes came to mind for the inspiration behind the mystery man, predominantly Joe Jonas. Despite his wife Sophie Turner's praise of the bop that's possibly a diss to her beau, Swifties have connected the "Mr. Perfectly Fine" lyric, "Mr. 'Looked me in the eye and told me you would never go away'" to two of her previous songs about Jonas: her Fearless track "Forever & Always" ("You looked me in the eye and told me you loved me/ Were you just kidding?") and her Speak Now song "Last Kiss" ("You told me you loved me/ So why did you go away?"). Plus, the timeline matches up since the two dated from July to October 2008.

When promoting the original Fearless record 13 years ago on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Swift threw Jonas under the bus by detailing exactly how he ended things with her. "I'm not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18," she told the talk show host. Swift returned to DeGeneres' program in May 2019 and described the "most rebellious thing" she did as a teenager, which was "put Joe Jonas on blast on your show."

Jake Gyllenhaal

An invisible string in the Swift universe also connects the lyrics between the new song and "All Too Well" from her 2012 album Red. The chorus of "Mr. Perfectly Fine" includes the line "Hello Mr. 'Casually Cruel,'" which resembles the bridge of "All Too Well" when she sings, "And you call me up again just to break me like a promise/ So casually cruel in the name of being honest." "All Too Well" was rumored to be about her ex Jake Gyllenhaal, whom she dated from October 2010 to January 2011.

John Mayer

A Grammy winner might be the subject of the song too: John Mayer, whom Swift reportedly dated December 2009 to February 2010. The lyric that points in his direction immediately follows the one hinting at Gyllenhaal in the chorus: "Mr. 'Everything revolves around you.'" That line draws back to her Speak Now track "Dear John" that starts off with the lyric, "Long were the nights when/ My days once revolved around you." Some have even traced the "Perfectly" in the title of her latest release to the title of Mayer's song "Perfectly Lonely" that was featured on his 2009 album Battle Studies, which also contains a collaboration with Swift titled "Half of My Heart."

In short, here are the fan theories linking Jonas, Mayer and Gyllenhaal to "Mr. Perfectly Fine":
