"Their stage show and choreography is a sight to see," O-Town's Jacob Underwood says over email. "We love what these guys are doing worldwide."
Underwood shared a playlist of tunes from 16 boy bands from all generations and genres, what he calls "a very small fraternity of what we consider some of the most influential groups and songs ever recorded." Naturally, Underwood shouted out hits from several of the groups that were popular during O-Town's heyday, like the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" and *NSYNC's "Tearin' Up My Heart." He had to pay tribute to those before him as well, featuring New Kids on the Block's classic "Hangin' Tough" and Blackstreet's R&B smash "No Diggity" in the playlist as well.
With O-Town still creating music nearly two decades later, Underwood also wanted to show some love to groups like BTS who are killing the boy band game now, including Prettymuch and the freshly reunited Jonas Brothers. Of course, he also had to highlight one of O-Town's recent singles, "Off," from The O.W.T.N. Album, which the group independently released earlier this year thanks to Pacific Records and a Kickstarter campaign.
Though Underwood revealed O-Town's boy band favorites, he welcomes fans' opinions as well: "Feel free to tell us if there’s a favorite of yours we missed!"
See if O-Town is spot-on with their picks with their boy band playlist, as well as some comments from Underwood, below.
One Direction, "Drag Me Down": This is just a great pop song. With a ton of great songs, this was one of the first songs we really loved from them.
BTS feat. Halsey, "Boy With Luv": We love what these guys are doing worldwide, their stage show and choreography is a sight to see. Of course we can’t forget the fact that one of our favorite current artists is on this song as well, go Halsey!!
Backstreet Boys, "I Want It That Way": I remember the day when I heard Howard Stern say that he even had to admit that this was a great song. It’s not every day you hear Howard give props to a boyband. So this song goes down in history.
O-Town, "Off": Our new single, we love it.
Jonas Brothers, "Cool": This is one of favorite Jonas Brothers song ever, and we love that it comes from their reunion. We feel some of our best music is after our reunion as well.
*NSYNC, "Tearin' Up My Heart": This song holds a special place with us because we all had to sing it at our initial audition for Making The Band. Such a defining song of the time.
BBMak, "Back Here": Our fans have made it clear that they are BBMak fans and would love to see us tour together. We agree and this is one our favorites from them.
Take That, "Back for Good": We recently got to do the James Corden show and he said Take That was his favorite boyband so this is a tribute to James and his love and support for boy bands in general. We love James!
New Kids on the Block, "Hangin' Tough": This could be the song that started it all, a crowd favorite no matter the crowd NKOTB hit a homerun with this one!!
98 Degrees, "Because of You": This song was a big hit and it resonated with all of us, it all came full circle on the My2K tour in 2016 when we got to listen to this song every night and sing along in person.
Westlife, "Can’t Lose What You Never Had": This was a song written by a friend of ours, Steve Kipner, who wrote a handful of O-TOWN songs “Every Six Seconds", “These Are The Days” and “Sensitive”. He also wrote the classics “Let’s Get Physical” and “Genie in the Bottle" 🙂
New Edition, "Can You Stand the Rain": Boys 2 Men re-recorded this song and these are two of our favorite groups so it’s only proper if we pay respect.
Prettymuch, "Summer on You": We saw their James Corden Performance and thought that it was refreshing to see them dance a little and go back to part harmony. Of the new generation of Boybands we think they’re doing a great job.
Tony! Toni! Toné!, "Let’s Get Down": This was one of our favorite jams from our high school years. You couldn’t go to a party without hearing this song and it’s still a BOP.
Blackstreet, "No Diggity": The story is, this song was written for Michael Jackson and because of a label dispute it went to Blackstreet. It turned into one of the most iconic songs of all time and one of our favorites. Topic might be one of the best albums ever made. It’s truly a part of our musical inspirations.
112, "Peaches and Cream": We love this song so much we paid ode to it on our second album in the track “Girl Like That”. This song is definitely a “club banger”!
