Canadian singer-songwriter Ryland James is premiering his brand-new video for “In My Head” exclusively via Billboard today (Aug. 1).

The song is incredibly soulful, as James, 20, shows off Adele-like qualities with a soaring chorus and emotional, heartbreak-ridden lyrics. “So if we fall apart, yeah I still got you in my head/ If we lost to time, yeah I’d still find you in my head,” he sings, his voice growing raspier over keys and acoustic guitar.

The video is just as emotional, as it follows a couple going through a breakup. “I’m sorry that I have to go,” one person says to the other via subtitles. “It’s just temporary. We’ll stay together, just trust me. We can make it through this."

"This is one of the last songs I wrote on a trip to Sweden; it quickly became one of my favorites,” James tells Billboard. “The song is about growing apart from the one you love and how the memories and love for that person can continue to live on in your head, even after the relationship inevitably fades away, be it from distance or time."

As James gears up to release his debut album, he'll be hitting the road with Alessia Cara this fall. He's also set to perform at Bumbershoot and Life is Beautiful.
