Tiffany on Embracing the '80s, Her Rock Edge & Touring With New Kids on the Block: 'Beautiful' Video Premiere

Tiffany

The song is "about what you perceive to be beautiful."

Tiffany is enjoying perhaps one of her busiest stretches since she first burst onto Billboard's charts, famously after touring malls, in 1987.

She released her new album, Pieces of Me, last year; recently revisited her breakthrough single, and first of two Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s, "I Think We're Alone Now," via a new version and video (after the original received a revival thanks to its synch in Netflix's Umbrella Academy); and is currently two weeks into New Kids on the Block's The Mixtape Tour, with Debbie Gibson, Naughty by Nature and Salt-N-Pepa.

"Music, music, music," Tiffany beams from El Paso, Texas, ahead of the all-star lineup's May 21 show. "Retro music, new music, I'm loving it."

Now, the singer-songwriter serves up the second video from Pieces of Me, for the set's "Beautiful," which Billboard is premiering below. The clip finds her basking in Brighton's artsy and graffiti-highlighted shopping district in the UK, where she's now mostly based.

"I'm a shopper. The mall tour taught me shopping," she says, laughing.

Tiffany, who co-wrote "Beautiful," describes the song as "about what you perceive to be beautiful. I was in LA, and there's the whole superficial thing about 'beautiful people' there. But I look at it differently. I look at 'beautiful' as all different body types, or cultures."

The song also highlights the crunchier side of Tiffany's music, a sound that, in somewhat of a contrast to her biggest pop hits, dominates Pieces of Me.

"It's got my rock edge, which I love so much," she says. "It's kind of a Go-Go's take. It's one of my favorite songs on the album."

Meanwhile, The Mixtape Tour finds Tiffany touring with New Kids on the Block for the first time in 30 years, with audiences cheering on both of her Hot 100 leaders: "I Think We're Alone Now" and ballad "Could've Been."

(Following the tour, which runs through July 14, Tiffany is planning her own 38-date, full-band trek set to begin this fall. Also ahead: the next Pieces of Me video, for the track "Waste of Time.")

"The energy is amazing," she says of the tour. "[New Kids'] Jon Knight was on my bus the other day and said, 'This is so cool: We're touring again!' I was like, 'This is cool.' All the guys are wonderful. And, seeing the fans react puts a smile on our faces."

Plus, "Deb and I have some of our original wardrobe pieces," Tiffany notes. "We're embracing that. We're proud, more than anything. We've been here 30 years and we still love what we do."
