Alphabeat Return From Hiatus With a Shimmery Dance Party in 'Shadows' Video: Exclusive

It’s been six years since Danish pop outfit Alphabeat announced their hiatus, but today (Feb. 28) marks their official collective return to music as they premiere the shimmery, strobe light-filled video for their brand new single “Shadows,” exclusively on Billboard.

"Shadows" marks a triumphant return for the band – who first emerged in 2007 with their self-titled debut album of bubblegum pop hits like “Fascination,” “Boyfriend,” and “10,000 Nights of Thunder" – as the feel-good, dance party bop proves that even years apart (with some crossed collaborative musical paths along the way) can’t hold back their pop prowess.

In the visuals, the sextet reconvene in the woods at night, lit only by their flashlights and a cloud of ominous smoke behind them. But things quickly turn into a lighthearted dance party as they arrive at what appears to be an empty cabin filled with glittery streamers and rainbow-colored lights, culminating in a backyard jam with a tambourine and sparklers.

Speaking of getting the band back together, vocalist Stine Bramsen says that it was always “written in the stars” that they would join forces once again.

“’Shadows’ was one of the first new Alphabeat songs we wrote,” Bramsen’s co-vocalist Anders SG tells Billboard. “When our manager heard us demo the song through the wall to his office, he came into the studio and was like, 'What is this? It's great!' This does happen sometimes, but not on a regular basis, so we thought, maybe we're onto something.”

“Other than the emotion in the chords and melody, the main thing was getting the groove right,” he adds. “For some reason the song reminded us a little bit of some of the more melancholy Motown hits like ‘Standing In The Shadows Of Love,’ so we wanted to have a kind of upbeat soul groove together with the pop hooks. ‘Shadows’ has a kind of signature drumbeat, which we like to think has become a bit of an Alphabeat trademark.”

He also reveals that the track, along with the bulk of their new music, was recorded in the summer house where they had previously made most of their demos, noting that “wildness, friendship, and naturally something that involves a few beers” brought them right back to when they first started making music together.

Alphabeat will be releasing their new album – featuring “Shadows” – this fall, via a new deal with Warner/Atlantic Records. The band plan to play some US shows, including dates in New York City and Los Angeles, around the time of the record’s release. You can also catch them at the Neon Gold Records showcase at SXSW on March 13.
