Ionnalee Heads For the 'Open Sea' On Potent New Track: Exclusive

John Strandh

Swedish audiovisual artist ionnalee has unveiled “Open Sea,” the first single off of her sophomore LP Remember the Future, exclusively on Billboard today (Feb. 7).

The synth-pop tune is accompanied by an otherworldly video, which ionnalee directed alongside cinematographer John Strandh, and follows her sporting a slew of gold and silver looks as she explores the universe. “The careless knot I knew wouldn’t hold/ Pulled you out to open sea/ Silence drained us on all that was golden/ You got the worst of me,” she sings, delivering the haunting lyrics with equal parts emotion and precision.

In a statement, ionnalee tells Billboard the meaning behind the electro-pop track, which she recorded with her best friend Claes Björklund. “The song talks about losing everything and being numb before acting against,” she says. “Much like my feeling towards the state of the world right now. I wrote it trying to mend myself after a rough patch."

She also explains that the captivating video was a challenge: “The visual is a ‘low fi sci fi’ adventure, and me and John Strandh had great fun making it, although it was a big challenge making handcrafted visual worlds after six years of filming in natural environments.”

ionnalee is gearing up for a North American and Canadian tour, beginning in April and ending in May. On the 11-date tour, she will make stops in New York City, Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles, with pop starlet Allie X as her opening act.

Remember the Future is due out on May 31.
