Normani Talks Creating 'Waves' With 6LACK: 'I Try To Be as Honest as I Can Be'

Normani recently sat down with Billboard to share the story behind her 6LACK collaboration “Waves,” explaining what her favorite lyric from the song is, who the first person she played the song for was, and much more.

The singer tells Billboard that it actually took quite some time until she considered her work on the song to be complete. “It was one of the first records that I recorded,” she says, “My favorite part as an artist is just seeing how many different phases a record can go through before actually being done.”

Normani states that before 6LACK jumped on the track, the pre-chorus was very different, and she ended up changing that, along with some of the other lyrics, once he signed on.

Asked what her favorite lyric from “Waves” is, she names (and performs) 6LACK's entire verse, and confesses that whenever she listens to the song with her mother, she fast forwards through her parts to get to his verse because she likes it so much.

“I really do try my best in terms of being in the studio to be as honest as I can be as an artist,” Normani says. “That's my only job at the end of the day, and I feel like that's what I did with this record because it doesn't get old. I play it over and over again, which sometimes I get annoyed with – hearing my own voice that many times. But this record, it doesn't get old.”

As for who the very first person she played the song for was, the singer reveals that it was her parents, calling her dad her “biggest fan” and her “cheerleader.”
