Cardiknox took to Twitter to announce their breakup on Friday (Dec. 7) but lessened the blow with one final song release.

In a series of tweets, the indie pop duo comprised of Lonnie Angle and Thomas Dutton acknowledged that they “fell in love creating music together” but “eventually grew apart.” In an effort to make the sad news more of a celebration of their career instead, Cardiknox released “Back in LA,” one of the last songs they finished together, calling the track “very dear to us.”

“Back in LA” poignantly captures the beginnings, and ultimate demise of their relationship, as Angle metaphorically sings, “We lit a fire and watched it all fall apart.” Cardiknox formed in 2013 after the two were introduced by a mutual friend and released their debut album Portrait in 2016.

Cardiknox also thanked their fans in the post, writing, “We could have never done any of this without you. All love. But for now, farewell.”
