Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran performed their duet version of Sheeran’s song “Perfect” at the Global Citizens Festival in South Africa on Sunday (Dec. 2), but are receiving attention for more than just their music.

Fans took to Twitter in a frenzy in reaction to Beyoncé and Sheeran’s very different outfit choices for the performance. Queen B took the stage wearing an elaborate magenta gown, while Sheeran opted for the casual route, wearing a short sleeve tee shirt layered over a long sleeve one, jeans and sneakers. While both looks are pretty on-brand for the singers, photos of their “Perfect” performance have been subjected to criticism, and of course, a couple of hilarious memes.

Some shared their thoughts that the clashing outfits reflect a much larger issue of gender inequality in the music industry. “Even tho I appreciate good musicians in normal clothes the double standard is ridiculous…what is expected of female vs. male artists,” one user wrote. Another user called out Sheeran for dressing like a “busker” to stand next to “possibly the most glamorous woman on the planet.”

Others were quick to come to Sheeran’s defense, saying that Beyoncé would have upstaged anyone, no matter what they were wearing. “Let’s be honest,” the fan wrote. “I could wear a tux and would look like s*** next to Bey if she was wearing a burlap sack.”
