The 1975, "It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)"

Matty Healy eyes the collection of alarm clocks on his nightstand from his bed and heads to the mirror. His reflection shrieks at him. And that’s how The 1975’s “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)” video kicks off its hallucination-filled ‘80s-style montage.

Modeled after the Talking Heads’ 1984 Stop Making Sense concert film, the 7:23 visual -- which dropped Monday, Dec. 3 -- appears to represent the disorientation and struggles associated with addiction.

The dreamlike collage has Healy’s bandmate Adam Hann awakening him backstage before a concert. Knocking a glass off a table, Healy emerges in a David Byrne-style suit, surrounded by a band and dancers that look as they could have been plucked right out of the original Talking Heads show. Healy and company even bust out in the same jog-like dance moves, but he soon becomes disoriented by a series of trippy events: times slows down, his mouth seems to disappear, fire licks around his legs and a copy of himself sends him a wink and a kiss from afar.

Healy then takes a step back from the chaos only he can see. The music halts, and he walks through a door and onto the set of the "Sincerity is Scary" music video. He watches absently as his clone gleefully skips down the street. The singer pushes back into the concert where the dancers have robotically continue on without him -- or music -- to accompany them.

He gets back into it, continuing to battle confusing visions, eventually awakening again backstage, before the concert. The video ends with retro yellow credits appearing atop footage of the Talking Heads-modeled performance.

The 29-year-old frontman of the English electropop band recently opened up about his struggles with drugs and his time at a rehab clinic late last year; Healy told Billboard that “It’s Not Living” is “the big heroin one."
