Shawn Mendes Reacts to 'Rolling Stone' Interview: 'The Positive Side Of a Story Doesn't Always Get Fully Told'

Shawn Mendes took to Twitter on Monday (Nov. 26) to comment on his revealing Rolling Stone cover story, which touches on his sexuality, career and more.

"Of course I have my insecurities and struggles but that’s just one part of me," Mendes tweeted. "Sometimes the positive side of a story doesn't always get fully told and I wish it had here. I love what I do and I love you guys so much."

The Rolling Stone story followed the 20-year-old pop star in his family's native Portugal where he talked about how much he loves smoking weed, how great his friendship with Hailey Baldwin is, and his fear of becoming irrelevant.

He also talked about how anxious he feels knowing that people are so curious about his sexuality. "I feel like I need to go be seen with someone -- like a girl -- in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” he said in the interview. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.”

Last year, the slew of YouTube comments on his sexuality propelled the pop star to make a series of Snapchat videos shutting down the rumors. “I noticed a lot of people were saying I gave them a ‘gay vibe,’” he told his millions of followers on Snapchat. “First of all, I’m not gay. Second of all, it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or wasn’t.”

The current Rolling Stone cover features Mendes in a black collared shirt, looking directly at the camera next to the words: "Confessions of a Neurotic Pop Idol."
