Backstreet Boys perform "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 28, 2018.

It certainly wasn’t “nothin’ but a mistake” when an NYPD cop sang along to the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” using his patrol car’s public address system on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10). The crowd loved it, and the video has since gone viral.

The clip shows the police officer, Richard Gunther, projecting his voice through his car’s loudspeaker system as the 1999 hit track plays behind him. His partner smiles from the passenger seat as people walk around and record the singing officer with their phones. The spectators cheer at the end as the officer thanks them and wishes them a good day.

“I'm So glad I can entertain everyone," Gunther commented on a post of the curbside performance. "Feels great interacting with the community and seeing all the smiles/laughs! You guys are the best!” The cop’s impromptu car performance happened near Astor Place in the East Village.
