JP Saxe Explores the Ups and Downs Of Relationships in 'Both Can Be True: Part 1': Premiere

JP Saxe falls in and out of love in his new release Both Can Be True: Part 1, comprised of the two singles “Blurry” and “25 in Barcelona,” premiering exclusively on Billboard today (Nov.8).

Although the tracks cover very different stages of a relationship, from its blissful beginning in “Blurry” to its painful end in “25 in Barcelona." Saxe finds similar emotions of love and disconnect that bring both stages together.

“Both of these songs are about connecting,” Saxe tells Billboard. “One where it was awesome, and one where it wasn’t. A lot of my songs are on either side of a feeling like that, and this felt like the most honest way to share them.”

In “Blurry,” Saxe sings of a love between two people that is so powerful, everything else around them seems to fade away. Saxe’s R&B vocals couple with a soft, but swelling piano melody, as he sings to his love, “Everything’s blurry but you.” With Saxe’s R&B croons artfully layered over a kaleidoscope of synths, “Blurry” creates a sonic haze that truly underscores the song’s message of what it means to be lost in love.

“25 in Barcelona,” which already has a music video, finds Saxe at the end of the relationship he sings about in “Blurry.” The text at the beginning of the music video explains he went on a trip to Barcelona with his friends “in an effort not to be fucking miserable" on his birthday. The video is comprised of actual footage from his 25th birthday while the song was being written, demonstrating Saxe’s undeniable authenticity and strong personal connection to the music he makes. With “25 in Barcelona,” Saxe works through his pain, after realizing that even after escaping halfway across the world, his heartbreak will ultimately catch up to him.

The Toronto native kicked off a new tour with Harry Hudson in Portland last night (Nov. 7) and will hit 18 cities across North America through Dec. 16.
