Maroon 5 made sure to salute a departed musical hero when it played on Sunday night (Sept. 30) in Detroit. Just before he and guitarist James Valentine played an acoustic encore version of "She Will Be Loved" at Little Caesars Arena, frontman Adam Levine offered the group's props to the late Aretha Franklin. "I'm sure this city's heard a lot of this, but -- Aretha Franklin, baby! We love you. We miss you. We thank you for everything. Greatest ever... Everybody else looks stupid, that's how great she was."

Levine concluded by noting that, "She's better than my ass. Shit...," before dedicating the song "to all the ladies" in the house.

Franklin passed away on Aug. 16 at the age of 76 and was feted with four days of memorials, including a concert and an epic eight-hour and 15-minute funeral on Aug. 30. Franklin will be honored with an all-star segment during the American Music Awards on Oct. 9 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and with a planned Nov. 14 all-star concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Details about the latter have yet to be announced.
