Toronto Singer-Songwriter lemin. Hits the Accelerator on 'Hold A: Act 2' EP: Exclusive Premiere

Christian Cassiel

Lemin. is trying some new moves on her latest EP hold A: act 2, available exclusively on Billboard ahead of its wide release Friday via Platoon.

The latest installment follows act 1 from late 2017 and shows the Toronto-based singer-songwriter putting a stronger hand on the entire process and coming out sounding more  confident than ever.

“This project is really my first baby -- all of the songs I wrote and/or produced in my studio apartment in Toronto,” lemin. tells Billboard. “Some of the vocals, like the chorus on ‘View of it All’ and harmonies on ‘Pink Champagne,’ are the originals from the nights I wrote the tracks.”

The personal touch allows lemin. to put her vocal abilities and distinct personality on full display. With a modern R&B, minimalist sound, she gives herself the space to let every vocal inflection count and every lyrical bar feel its deserved weight. Her deliberate and unhurried approach encourages deeper, immersive listening that provides plenty of cathartic payoffs in its most human moments like on the standout track “Mario Kart” and closer “Pink Champagne.”

“‘Mario Kart’ and ‘Pink Champagne’ are two of my favorite songs because they really epitomize what I want people to take away from the project: love yourself, trust yourself, and you’ll always pull through,” she explains. “I called the project hold A because in Mario Kart you ‘hold A to accelerate,’ and that’s what making this project felt like for me: accelerating into who I am, into loving myself, and into all that I am capable of.”

When it comes to establishing her own voice, lemin. is moving full-speed ahead.
