MKTO Experience Heartbreak Through Flashbacks in 'How Can I Forget' Video: Premiere

The single marks the pop duo's first release in more than two years.

MKTO are kicking off a new chapter today (Sept. 7) with their first single since 2016, "How Can I Forget." The duo (Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller) also unveil the nostalgic video for the bright new track, with Billboard giving fans a first look.

The Izak Rappaport-directed visual -- a nod to Westworld -- sees Kelley and Oller hooked up to mind machines that trigger memories from past relationships, which they sing about in the song. "It’s talking about how I can’t forget that certain someone or going to some places and you just can’t help but think of somebody and reflect on those memories," Kelley says of the "How Can I Forget" premise.

But while the reminiscent video and yearning lyrics are clearly about a relationship, Kelley stresses that the song is also for MKTO's fans and how the guys haven't forgotten them, a big reason why they've returned from their brief hiatus. "To know that there are millions of streams of our songs we have put out previously and knowing that there is still support for MKTO, it was only right we put out new music," he adds.

In reality, fans never really had anything to worry about when it came to MKTO reuniting. Though the guys pursued different paths upon announcing their hiatus in 2016, they never lost the brotherly love they have for each other or the magic of MKTO.

"There's no better feeling than having that and to be back on stage with one of my best friends," Oller exclaims. "We both think with the creation process so far that these are some of the strongest songs we've done."

"How Can I Forget" was written by Kelley along with Lindy Robbins, August Grant, Dag Lundberg and longtime collaborators Evan "Kidd" Bogart and Eman Kiriakou. The latter two were instrumental in signing MKTO to Columbia Records at the beginning of their career, and have since moved Kelley and Oller over to their BMG output Crooked Paintings.

With a new song released and new label to call home, MKTO definitely won't forget their comeback -- or what's ahead. "It feels good to be releasing music again," Kelley says. Oller couldn't agree more: "No better feeling then performing music with your best friend and creating music with your family."
