BTS' 'Idol' Music Video is Fastest to Reach 100M Views In 2018

BTS’ “Idol” already made history this week with the best music video debut ever on YouTube, and the festive video continues to make an impact. Today (Aug. 30), Billboard can confirm that “Idol” is the fastest music video of the year to exceed 100 million views.

According to a YouTube representative, the feat took “under 6 days” since its upload to the site on Aug. 24. At press time, the view count has exceeded 108.7 million views.

Earlier this week, BTS’ “Idol” was recognized by the Google-owned streaming service as the most-viewed music video ever in a 24-hour period, with the site validating over 45 million views within that time. It surpassed the record previously set by Taylor Swift’s 2017 music video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” which exceeded 43.2 million views in a day.

The septet’s latest is the second-fastest Korean music video to reach the milestone; in 2013, Psy’s “Gentleman” achieved the feat on its fourth day after its upload to YouTube. By comparison, BTS’ prior release, May’s “Fake Love,” hit the milestone on its eighth day on the site, according to Soompi.

“Idol” is the lead single on BTS’ compilation album Love Yourself: Answer, which completes the group’s Love Yourself album trilogy. An alternate version of "Idol" featuring Nicki Minaj is available on digital releases of the album. Answer follows the May release of Love Yourself: Tear, which made history as the first-ever album by a Korean artist to hit No. 1 the Billboard 200. Answer is anticipated to similarly chart.

The album ties into their sold-out Love Yourself world tour, which heads Stateside early next month and will end in October with the first-ever U.S stadium show held by a Korean act on Oct. 6 at New York City’s Citi Field.
