Brett Dennen Keeps the Summer Vibes Alive With 'Here's Looking At You Kid' EP

September may be looming, but Brett Dennen is all about the bright sounds of summer with his latest EP Here's Looking at You Kid. The 5-track EP is part two of Dennen's 2-EP project, out tomorrow (Aug. 24) via Downtown Records, and Billboard has an exclusive first listen of the lighthearted record.

Here's Looking at You Kid was kicked off with the thumping toe-tapper title track at the beginning of the month, introducing a raw sound impacted by Dennen's off-kilter voice and atmospheric guitar. That vibe is carried throughout the rest of the EP, but presented with some pop flair on "Be Somebody," anthemic stomps on "The People I Love," roaring horns on "Live in the Moment," and sweet acoustic guitar on "Baker's Globe Mallow." All five tracks come together to make a collection of feel-good, sunny sounds that'll keep the summer vibes alive as September sets in.

Dennen worked with Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson (Adele, P!nk) to write and co-produce both Let's... and Here's Looking at You Kid, keeping four themes in mind: Friendship, fatherhood, groundedness, and above all, love. The 38-year-old decided on two EPs as opposed to a full album mostly because "I was feeling restless with the lack of immediacy in my past releases," he admits, but also because the songs that inspired the ones he wrote were still stuck in his head.

''Be Somebody' was written days after I first heard Post Malone’s 'Better Now' -- I know the songs are quite different, but that’s the way it is," he asserts. "Other songs that inspire me are 'Ain’t No Man' by the Avett Brothers and 'Wildflowers' by Tom Petty."

Current events also played a role for the California native. "'Baker’s Globe Mallow' is a personal story of the wildfires in Northern California. We wrote the song while fires were raging and tragically, the fires are still spreading even now as the song is released. The process feels relevant not only to my life now, but to the way people listen to new music."

Though Dennen has been making music for nearly 15 years -- you may be familiar with his indie-rock hits "Comeback Kid (That's My Dog)" and "Ain't No Reason" -- his fresh approach to songwriting has helped his music still resonate: "Already Gone," a track from his previous EP Let's..., landed in the Top 40 on the Rock Airplay chart, and "Here's Looking at You Kid" is currently the second most-added song on AAA radio. The singer has spent the summer making fans dance on the Good Vibes Tour with Jason Mraz, which will continue until Sept. 14. He'll embark on his own headlining tour in November.
