Grimes and Elon Musk attend The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute benefit gala celebrating the opening of the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibition on May 7, 2018 in New York City.

The singer also claims she's tried to unionize Tesla.

Grimes clarified her decision to defend boyfriend Elon Musk's donations to the Republican Party on Wednesday, (July 25) after fans scrutinized her position. Musk, the founder of SpaceX, CEO of Tesla, and a leader in combating climate change, reportedly donated almost $40,000 to support House Republicans this year.

Grimes first defended Musk on Twitter, writing "every aerospace company has to donate to republicans in order to function." She continued to say "it’s the price of doing business in america," and that Musk donates "way more money, like absurdly more, to environmental causes."

After sources began reporting Grimes' tweet, she clarified that she does not support donating to Republicans.

Grimes also told followers that she had tried to “instigate [a] union vote so y’all would lay off," after a complaint was filed by the National Labor Relations Board, accusing Musk of threatening to strip benefits from Tesla workers who supported unionization.
