Matt Simons is stripping away every piece of his latest single “We Can Do Better” until each part of the song’s foundation has been tested.

Following the acoustic iteration that dropped in late May, the New York-based artist delivers yet another equally affecting reinterpretation that maintains the intimacy imbued in the track’s lyrics. For Simons, it was more of a personal challenge than any specific artistic endeavor.

“It’s important to me that a song I write passes the ‘solo piano’ test,” Simons tells Billboard. “If it doesn’t work without all of the production bells and whistles, I don’t feel comfortable releasing it.”

The minimalist approach succeeds in capturing the same magic as the original tune while expanding on Simons’ musical capabilities by bringing the multi-instrumentalist’s jazz influences to the forefront. Without the luxury of heavy production or intricate instrumentation, the “Catch & Release” singer rises to the occasion with an impassioned cadence and nimble strokes on the piano that fill the bare-bones performance with an emotional heft.

Recorded in a garage rehearsal space in one take, Simons proves that the positive message of "We Can Do Better" can shine through in any scenario.
