GRANT Gives a Cinematic Behind-the-Scenes Peek With Live 'Catcher In the Rye' Video: Premiere
Listening to GRANT's "Catcher In the Rye" feels strangely similar to falling in love: overwhelming, euphoric and joyous, yet just haunting enough to leave a little mystery. The Swedish singer/songwriter dives back into the explosive track from her debut LP, In Bloom, for a live in-studio video premiering exclusively through Billboard today (June 7).
"The first time falling happily in love is monumental," GRANT tells Billboard of her inspiration. "I thought of Catcher In the Rye, connecting to a naive and childish sense of running into someone’s arms when you thought you were actually heading somewhere else. Then wanting to stay forever in the moment, away from the inevitable pains of reality by holding on to that catcher in the rye. I wanted to write about how my boyfriend made me feel."
The one-take video gives viewers a sweeping inside look at Stockhom's iconic Ingrid Studio, a retro recording space co-owned by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn & John. Having been given the opportunity to utilize a studio also used by notable acts like Lykke Li and Franz Ferdinand, GRANT wanted to make the most of it.
All the studio's charm can be witnessed thanks to the constantly-panning camera, giving a dramatic element to an otherwise relatively ordinary concept.
"I think the studio is beautiful," GRANT explains. "It’s got a nice vintage vibe and sort of invites you to make up drama. Just knowing who has played there before made it special. We decided on dressing up nice and the rest is feeling and doing our thing. I guess my music can be a bit cinematic. Playing live, it made sense to film it in one take."
As she sings and dances decked out in a luscious animal print coat, GRANT adds an entirely new level of depth to the song with a stunning live rendition. The singer will soon be making her international live debut supporting Tove Styrke in London before hitting various festivals across Scandinavia and penning her follow-up to her stellar debut.
