Backstreet Boys Discuss Explaining 'I Want It That Way' to Chrissy Teigen at CMT Music Awards

The Backstreet Boys caught up with with Billboard’s Taylor Weatherby on the red carpet at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday (June 6) in Nashville, for a chat about their explanation of “I Want It That Way” to Chrissy Teigen and the success of their new single “Don't Go Breaking My Heart.”

The band recently responded to a tweet from Teigen trying to understand the meaning behind their classic track. While they tried to explain it, some fans are still confused.

“We’ve been asked that question about 337,000 times,” Kevin Richardson told Billboard. “It’s subjective. It’s how you feel about it. It’s how you interpret it. It’s what it means to you, like all art should be.”

“But truthfully, it’s still not explained,” said Nick Carter, while AJ McLean adds that “sometimes the best answers is no answer at all.”

Richardson said they “thought we’d have fun with [Chrissy] and just give her an answer back that really didn’t mean anything.” On the subject, they also reflect upon the time they appeared on Lip Sync Battle, with AJ saying, “She was fangirling, it was awesome. It was really cute…She had posters of me and [Nick] in her dressing room…while she was eating her chicken nuggets, cause she was pregnant. It was perfect.”

Backstreet Boys also discussed the positive reaction their new single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” has received, with Carter revealing that he still finds it “shocking.”

“To me it feels like it’s new, it feels like we’ve started all over again cause we’re so grateful and so humbled and honored to be in this position after 25 years,” he stated.

“It’s nice to put something you’ve created out there and people are responding to it,” continued Richardson, “that it’s resonating worldwide with people and they’re responding in a positive way to it. There’s nothing more that you could ask for.”
