Grace Vanderwaal Gives an Enchanting 'Tiny Desk' Performance: Watch
Grace Vanderwaal, the 14-year old who won the nation's heart on America’s Got Talent in 2016, stopped by NPR’s "Tiny Desk" on Tuesday (June 5) to perform a few of her hits alongside guitarist Melissa Dougherty. Rocking a blue dress covered in stars and moons, the singer opened up the set with “Moonlight,” before diving into “Darkness Keep Chasing Me.”
“I was always very hesitant to sing this song,” Vanderwaal said of the latter. “I’ve always just been told that it’s too much of a downer to sing, but I enjoy singing it.” She closed out the set with her reworking of Johnny Nash’s “Clearly,” which Vanderwaal said came to light as a collaboration between her and her producers. “We thought it would be cool to add darker lyrics adding up to the happy chorus, it sounds really weird when I say it out loud,” she said with a smile.
In addition to releasing her debut album Just The Beginning to critical acclaim, Vanderwaal is set to star as the lead in Disney’s upcoming Stargirl, the first original film to premiere on the company’s upcoming streaming service. Director Julia Hart said she knew that Vanderwaal, “was Stargirl almost immediately. The world knows what a talented performer she is, and I cannot wait for everyone to see just how many sides there are to this special and magical woman.”
