"Saturday night in Dee-troit!" Rick Astley proclaimed a few times at the city's Saint Andrews Hall. The proclamation allowed the resurgent British singer to roll a bit looser than he has on his current North American tour.
Astley used the Motor City occasion to make a few special additions to his regular set list. Mid-show he spoke about being "truly inspired" by a visit to "a certain museum" (Detroit's Motown Historical Museum in the label's original headquarters) and particularly by hanging and singing the Temptations' "My Girl" in Studio A.
"We were inspired, so we're gonna do 'My Girl,'" Astley said, doing his own take on the Temptations Walk during the performance. "They don't write 'em like that anymore, do they?" he said afterwards. "They write some good 'uns, but they don't write 'em like that."
