Shawn Mendes opens up about new single “In My Blood" on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe.

Overnight on Thursday (Mar. 22), Canadian singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes shared his latest single "In My Blood," the artist's first release since his 2016 LP Illuminate. In a Beats 1 video, Mendes opened up to Zane Lowe about his process for making the new track.

The lead single -- which will appear on Mendes’ upcoming third album -- was apparently the first thing he wrote during his studio sessions. “We walked in the first day and we wrote 'In My Blood,'" he told Lowe, explaining that he was aiming for a more explosive, stadium rock sound. "When we walked in, I was like, I want to make a Kings of Leon record. I want to go more rock."

"In My Blood" is about Mendes’ own experiences with anxiety. "It was kind of something that hit me last year," he confessed. "Growing up, I was a pretty calm kid. I knew people who suffered from anxiety, found it kind of hard to understand, and then when it hits you, you’re like, 'Oh my god, this is crazy.'"

He also detailed which instruments went into the production of "In My Blood" -- though he attributed the song's sentimentality to its lyrics. "Regardless of melodies or production, the only way things are going to get better is if it’s more honest," he said.

Despite the subject matter, the 19-year-old reassures fans that he is doing well. "When I play that song, I go 'Just so you know I’m okay,'" he said. "The best thing about it is that it’s not all down. The whole reason I wrote the song was to be like, at the very end, ‘It’s not in my blood to do that.'"
