"I’m always going out on stage wondering if people are going to sing along with me,” Puth admits to Billboard. “[Shawn] has songs that obviously everybody knows. All of his fans there, die-hard fans, will sing every lyric back, but seeing that so many times and having some of his fans sing every lyric of my song back — and being so excited to see me — it injected this newfound confidence in performing ... I was moving differently on stage."
As two of the most in-demand male pop stars in the last couple of years, both Mendes and Puth had plenty to do prior to their shows every night on the Illuminate Tour, which meant they didn’t get a whole lot of downtime aside from pre- and post-show tour bus hangs. But when they did get a chance to spend time together, of course it was music-related. "We vibed out with John Mayer,” Puth recalls.
Other than their mutual love for Mayer, they actually differ quite in bit in their tastes, which ended up being a fun introduction for one another. “I was showing him Kirk Franklin, Gospel music, Baptist choirs, and he was showing me -- he was like, ‘Do you know this song, "I’ll Be Watching You" by P. Diddy?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know that song, Shawn, who was born in 1998.' [Laughs.] But he was actually schooling me on stuff too. I hadn’t heard some of these rock records. He has great taste in music."
Their jam sessions ended up turning into impromptu writing sessions, during which Puth excitedly says they “started something really cool” together. Unfortunately the timing wasn’t right, as their hectic tour schedules got in the way — but judging by what Puth took away from his time on the road with Mendes, a Charlie/Shawn collaboration isn’t totally out of the question for the future.
“He’ll hate me for saying this, but I just assumed he had other people writing most of his material,” Puth says. “But when he sat down and just started singing melodies, kind of like I did, I was like, 'Wow! That’s really impressive.' Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Puth is still working on his sophomore album, Voicenotes, which is set to arrive next year. Most recently, Puth engaged with fans through the Sing With LG contest, in which fans could duet “Attention” with him in hopes of winning a chance to hang out with him in the new year. The winner will be announced Dec. 22. Check out the contest’s official website here and Puth’s tour dates below.
