Pop Up-and-Comer Aly Ryan Premieres Hook-Filled Debut EP: Listen
German-born, LA-based artist Aly Ryan made waves this past summer when her out-of-nowhere, self-released bop-and-a-half “No Parachute” became a genuine SoundCloud sensation. Now, almost seven million spins in between that and its winsome follow-up “Donate a Dollar,” the 22-year old newcomer arrives with her debut EP, premiering exclusively via Billboard.
The Misfits -- still self-released -- is bookended by those two standbys, with a pair of new tracks providing the fresh, tasty filling in the center. There’s the yearning outcast anthem “Lonely Party” (from which the EP gets its name) and the hypnotizing, almost aqueous synth-throbber, “The Lucky Ones.” The set was produced by Jose Aguirre Lopez and Fabian Ordorica.
“No Parachute” remains the crown jewel of Aly Ryan’s repertoire and a rousing jumping-off-point for the new EP. It’s a bouncy, swaggering pop song and an interlocking assembly line of hooks, one of those tracks where each verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and post-chorus flows into the other just so. The percussion pops especially in this one; loud in the mix, those live drums hammer the whole thing home.
Ryan tells Billboard she plans to release a follow-up single called “Borrow Time” in January 2018, which will be the first sampling from her debut full-length, due mid-year. For now, listen to all of The Misfits below.
