Jessie J Releases Defiant 'Think About That' Single, Announces Intimate Tour
Early Friday (Sept. 15) Jessie J released her defiant new track “Think About That” with its accompanying sultry music video, making this her second single since returning after 2015’s “Flashlight.”
“Think About That” is both low-key and jarring, fierce and restrained from start to finish, with the singer making it clear that she's done catering to someone else, spitting "I was living my dreams through your eyes/ Building my life on your lies/ You just laughed when I cried." The video opens with Jessie J with her hands tied, dripping wet. She’s soon freed, donning a BDSM-esque leather mask and fishnet body stocking as she crawls at the camera and dances in thigh-high boots on a dim, smoky street.
There’s no obvious vocal power plays on the track, but Jessie's holding back makes each exhale into the hook feel like a hard hit as the lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone who spent years holding her back and trading on her fame. The piano melody hovers over the percussion and avoids resolve, never warming up the track.
The lyrics tear into the subject, calling out a parasitic relationship that has finally been dismantled. In the second verse she sings, "All you disturb is my work and my patience/ Years of grinding, you took it, you broke it/ All 'cause you fake it/ You wanna be famous." Jessie uses the pre-chorus to build upon the way this relationship was draining her, holding her back. She repeats, "I screamed 'Yes,' you told me 'nah'/ You fed me fear, I spoke to God/ I was living my dreams through your eyes/ Building my life on your lies, yeah/ You just laughed when I cried," before resorting to a steady, seething repetition of "Think about that."
This new song come just two days after Jessie J announced her new project R.O.S.E. in a series of four emotional videos on Instagram. Each letter stands for a different word, which she later explains is attached to four different songs she will eventually share. R.O.S.E. stands for Realizations, Obsessions, Sex, and Empowerment, which are explained in greater detail in minute long video.
In the first clip, her realizations explain where she has been for the past two years while not releasing new music. She starts, “’I don’t want to make music anymore.’ I said that out loud. Wow. Then I tried to stop and I didn’t know how to, because it’s impossible to walk away from true love. Art, emotion, lyrics, music, feeling is what I need to survive. Man, that pain woke me up. It’s inside out you know? I don’t do this because I want to do it, I do it because I have to. I feel everything so deeply.” R.O.S.E. does not yet have a release date.
The sentiment of the first video - of not wanting to continue with music - rings true with the process behind recording "Think About That" with producer DJ Camper. In a press release, Jessie J explains, "I didn't want to write any new songs. Camper said 'Ok' then before he left the room, he put the beat for 'Think About That' on a loop. The lyric and melody just starting falling out of me, and 15 minutes later when he returned I had a song. He laughed and said 'see.'”
This October Jessie J will hit the road for a series of intimate performances in the U.K., Europe and the U.S. Find the full list of dates on her site, and sit tight for more concrete details on her upcoming fourth studio album.
