Everything is not as laid back as it seems in the video for Quinn XCII’s single “Straightjacket."

Despite the bright color palette, casual pool party, and chill musical accompaniment, a deeper menace follows the Detroit vocalist and songwriter in the form of his dual-personality date. In the video directed by Kevin Slack (LP, The Gaslight Anthem), the tension of Quinn’s duplicitous party guest is a slow boil to an almost-unavoidable, cringe-inducing moment of public humiliation.

“People have really connected so well with the message of Straightjacket that I wanted to bring it all to life with a proper music video,” Quinn tells Billboard. “I had the pleasure of working with [director] Kevin Slack to put together a fun short story that highlights the situation I speak of in the song -- dating someone who acts one way in public but totally different (and crazier) behind closed doors, and the goal of ultimately exposing that true personality to everyone.”

Although the message rings true for Quinn, it was apparently tough to see the “psycho from a Midwest suburb” in action. According to the singer, he couldn’t stop cracking up to his completely friendly but fully-committed co-lead during takes. The cast was filled out by local fans, who lend out the perfect reaction shots as stand-ins for the audience.

Along with a lesson in keeping one's composure in public, the video suggests that the key to a perfect afternoon is just having the right company.

“Straightjacket” is the lead single off Quinn XCII’s debut album The Story Of Us, which is set to drop Sept. 15 via Columbia Records. His 30-date North American tour will begin later in the month on Sept. 24 in Salt Lake City. For tour information, check out his website here.
