Crucially, Bieber alluded to why he canceled the dates, though he didn't give a specific reason for bowing out after 18 months on the road. "Me taking this time right now is me saying I want to be SUSTAINABLE... I want my career to be sustainable, but I also want my mind heart and soul to be sustainable."
After 150 dates around the world, Bieber, 23, put the brakes on the tour on July 24, with promoter AEG Presents explaining, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber will cancel the remainder of the Purpose World Tour concerts. Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them. He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over last 18 months. He is grateful and honored to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across 6 continents during this run. However, after careful consideration he has decided he will not be performing any further dates."
The move set off rampant speculation about why Bieber would call an end to the wildly successful outing, which was winding down with mostly stadium dates dates slated to feature opening sets from Vic Mensa, Migos and Martin Garrix. In April, Billboard reported that the tour was nearing $200 million in earnings.
Though the "unforeseen circumstances" have not been explained to date, manager Scooter Braun said in an Instagram post that Bieber's "soul and wellbeing" had to come first. Bieber opened up in the note about some of the foibles of his past that have led him to do the work that has kept him out of tabloid headlines lately after a run of bad press from 2012-2014. "I have let my insecurities get the best of me at times, I let my broken relationships dictate the way I acted towards people and the way I treated them!" he wrote. "I let bitterness, jealousy and fear run my life!!! I am extremely blessed to have people in the past few years help me build my character back up reminding me of who I am and who I want to be!"
In another sign of his maturity, Bieber said he's taking the time now to work on himself because he wants to "be the man I want to be, the husband I eventually want to be and the father I want to be."
