Today (May 19), indie rockers Local Natives released the shimmering new track, "The Only Heirs." On the horn-heavy song, the group fittingly collaborated with Nico Segal, the Chicago based trumpeter and producer who formerly went by Donnie Trumpet and has frequently collaborated with Chance the Rapper.
"The Only Heirs" follows Local Natives' recent one-off, "I Saw You Close Your Eyes," which arrived towards the end of March. Both songs come after the group's third album, Sunlit Youth, which was released back in September. In the past, the Los Angeles outfit never released new material in between album cycles, but now seem to be adopting to the single-friendly environment of streaming.
Much like previous songs, "The Only Heirs" offers up Local Natives' signature gorgeous harmonies and glittering synths, while also incorporating lighter-than-usual tinny percussion and, of course, Segal's trumpet. All the while, the lyrics -- "You and I, we are the only heirs" -- build on the concept of taking responsibility for the future and calling for change, which they first laid out on their anthemic hit "Fountain of Youth."
