Ed Sheeran Adds TLC's 'No Scrubs' Songwriters to 'Shape of You' Credits
In recent weeks, the song's pre-chorus ("Boy, let's not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and put that body on me") started to receive comparisons to the '90s R&B classic for its similar lyrical rhythm ("No, I don't want no scrubs/ A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me"). Now, Sheeran validates the comparisons by adding "No Scrubs" co-writers Kandi Burruss and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, of the girl group Xscape, along with Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs to the song's credits.
Kandi Burruss, a current leading player on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, took the time out to celebrate her latest writing credit on Instagram. "Congrats #edsheeran @teddysphotos for having the #1 album! & thank you for allowing @majorgirl & I to share in the success of #ShapeOfYou! #1 for 7 weeks! This is how I dance every time this song comes on. #ShapeOfYou #Blessings."
Tiny also got in on the fun by posting a screen grab of a headline announcing the news alongside a caption that included the money-mouth face emoji.
Although the pair hasn't earned a Hot 100 No. 1 as an artist, after "No Scrubs," "Shape of You" becomes Tiny's second and Burruss' third chart-topper based on writing credits (Burruss also co-wrote Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills").
This isn't the first time an artist has snuck songwriters onto their credits after the song became a smash, and people started to listen more closely. In 2015, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars had to add the five writers of the Gap Band's “I Don’t Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops, Up Side Your Head),” to "Uptown Funk."
