"We made a fancy story up, people fell for it. It was very embarrassing."

Ed Sheeran did not have his face cut during a party prank gone awry with James Blunt and Princess Beatrice. Turns out, the real prank was on all of us.

In an interview with U.K. men's lifestyle magazine ShortList, Blunt revealed the whole story was a hoax.

"Ed was drunk, messing around, and he cut himself," he said. "We made a fancy story up, people fell for it. It was very embarrassing."

Last November, Sheeran was seen with a slice taken out of his cheek. According to news reports at the time, it was the result of a Princess Beatrice attempting to "knight" Blunt. Only, when she lifted a ceremonial sword, she inadvertently gashed Sheeran's face in the process, the story went.

Beatrice is Prince William and Prince Harry's cousin and the second female in line to succeed her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

"It's bizarre that people fell for it," Blunt said, joking. "I blame him. He must be desperate -- he's trying to sell records."

While Blunt admitted that he was there when Sheeran cut himself, he did not disclose how it happened. A former captain for the British Army, Blunt did at least help his friend tend to his wound.

"He cut himself and I just patched him up. It’s made him look prettier," he said.
