A R I Z O N A on Touring With Kevin Garrett, Upcoming Debut Album & Finding an Audience on Spotify

Jimmy Fontaine

The electronic pop band is set to release their first album in May.

New Jersey-based band A R I Z O N A is currently on its first-ever tour, opening for R&B singer-songwriter Kevin Garrett around the U.S., and is slated to open for alt-pop band COIN on their upcoming tour later this year. They have already announced a few upcoming festival spots, including SXSW (Austin), Governors Ball (NYC) and Firefly (Dover, Delaware).

The Robin Schulz remix of their song “I Was Wrong” spent nine weeks on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at No. 35 in August, and their newest release, “Oceans Away,” has been featured on Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist and has garnered more than 35.8 million plays on the platform since its release in December.

Billboard sat down with the members of the up-and-coming band -- Zach Hannah (vocals), David Labuguen (keys) and Nate Esquite (guitar) -- at their show at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday to talk about how they got started, their first-ever tour and what’s next.

How did the band get started?

Zach Hannah: We’ve been together for about two years, but we’ve all known each other forever. We started working on our music when we were all living together in Boston. This was never, ever a thought in our minds -- to do what we’re doing right now. For a couple of kids who grew up with nothing… We made it as producers and songwriters who had to give our gift away -- now we get to keep [our gifts], and it seems that everyone likes it. That’s honestly the greatest gift of all.

How is your first-ever tour going so far?

Nate Esquite: It’s been a lot of fun. The big thing for us is that we have so many listeners on Spotify, we had no idea how that would translate onstage. So coming out to a lot of these places for the first time has been really cool to see how passionate people are about our music, and we finally get to put faces to all our listeners. We’re also based in Jersey, right outside the city, so this is our hometown crowd; we’re really happy to be home.

Your debut album, GALLERY, is coming out in May. What should we expect?

Hannah: We got to do a lot of [musical] exploring this year. With “Oceans Away” being out right now, it’s been having a bigger impact on our audience than we thought it would. The song is a mix of some of the stuff we’ve done and some of the new stuff that’s on the album, so we definitely go back and forth [with our sound]. The singles we have out now are definitely a good indicator of what our album will sound like, but we also like having fun, and we’re all pretty “left-field” guys, so there’s definitely a lot of interesting stuff on [the album].
