Watch Bruno Mars Make His Adele Collaboration 'All I Ask' His Own
During a visit to the BBC 1 Live Lounge on Wednesday (Nov. 2), Mars covered Adele's heartbreaking ballad "All I Ask," which he wrote with the British superstar. While Mars kept the melody the same as Adele's beltable tune, he added a little Bruno flair with jazzy electronic sounds and effortless swag on the major notes.
His biggest moment during the cover came at the end, when Mars began an impressive run of high notes building up to a powerful finish on the word "again." But according to his recent interview with Rolling Stone, Mars' favorite part is the line "Take me by the hand while we do what lovers do" because of the songwriting story behind it.
"We were aiming for that big, diva, ballad thing -- that's what I envisioned," he explained to the magazine. "But 'lovers'? I don't know if anybody really says 'lovers.' 'Yeah, we're lovers.' 'This is my lover.' I was like, 'Should we rethink that?'"
Insisting that Adele was "so gangster" about Mars' suggestion, he revealed that she quickly shot him down. "She was like, 'Nope. That's what it has to be.' And she was right. It's this grand word that makes the song bigger because no one says it. Because nobody talks like that, it pops out."
Adding to the fanboying, Mars admitted that he'll bust out in the song in his spare time. "Sometimes I play it on the piano, and I look forward to singing that part," he said. "It's f---ing perfect."
