Half the Animal Make It Feel Like 'Saturday Night' On New Song: Exclusive Premiere
Considering Half the Animal are a pop rock band from Los Angeles, it only seemed fitting they made their debut over the summer. The catchy and heartfelt debut single "Babylon" introduced Half the Animal as a group capable of delivering crisp and clear pop vocals that float atop driving alt-rock hooks.
The band's second song, feel-good track "Saturday Night" -- which is being shared exclusively with Billboard -- sees them dive deeper into this sonic setup as they conjure the anticipation and excitement that comes with a Saturday night.
“All of us have weak areas that we know aren't healthy for us, but we continue to do those things because they make us feel alive and a bit scandalous, "drummer Nick Gross tells Billboard. "‘Saturday Night’ is a reference to that particular feeling, which doesn't necessarily have to be a relationship, it can be that fix in your life that keeps you coming back for more, because everyone loves a good Saturday night.”
The video plays into such notions, as footage sees the band members skate around Venice Beach, Calif., and goof off in a pool (with an inflatable flamingo, of course) illustrating both their flair for fun and highlighting their roots as California beach boys with some edge.
Approaching the weekend isn't the only thing Half the Animal have to look forward to, though -- their debut EP, Shapes, arrives on Feb. 3. So far, "Babylon" and "Saturday Night" have established their well-manicured and polished sound, which will surely be heard on the remaining tracks and largely stems from the band members' shared history.
Vocalist Chase Johnson and Gross originally met in Laguna Beach, Calif., where they were later cast on MTV's reality show of the same name. Years later, when it came time to form Half the Animal -- which at times channels Maroon 5 -- the duo doubled its numbers and were joined by bassist Evan Smith (Silversun Pickups, Chromeo, Big Data) and guitarist Alex Asch.
While there are still a handful of "Saturday Nights" until the release of Half the Animal's EP, fortunately the two tracks shared so far are repeat-worthy. Listen to "Saturday Night" below.
