Bahamian Singer Chloe Campbell Delivers Soulful Breakup Anthem 'Sick': Premiere
Soulful pop songbird Chloe Campbell tries to shake a bad habit on the breakup anthem "Sick," premiering on Billboard.
"You make me sick to my stomach, you so gross to me, I'ma vomit, I get nauseated and my head is achin'," the 16-year-old, blue-haired Bahamian belts on the hook. "Thought you'd be good for me, I was wrong, and I feel better now that you're gone."
The 16-year-old independent songstress teamed with Bahamian producer Zoltan for the record, co-produced by Chris "Tek" O’Ryan, which was inspired by a person who made her physically ill. "I think most people at one point or another had someone like an ex or friend that they simply can not be around any longer," Campbell tells Billboard. "I have definitely have felt that anxiety, and I thought it was a relatable thing to make into a song. The song is written from a personal point of view, but I would hope it has a large universal appeal."
Influenced by the vocal prowess of powerhouses like Etta James and Amy Winehouse, and the fearlessness of pop magnates like Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, Campbell grew up in a musical family where her grandfather was a musician and her grandmother was a fan of soul music. Her roots in the Bahamas also made her a reggae lover as she frequently listened to the likes of Buju Banton and Beenie Man.
With records like "Sick," Campbell hopes to show her listeners to take advantage of the freedom of expression. "I want the audience to be able to hear their own lives in my lyrics and my performance," she adds. "Music is a platform for me to express myself, and I hope to inspire people to find their way of expressing themselves."
