Bear Mountain Teams Up With Nelly Furtado for New Song 'On My Own': Exclusive Premiere
Bear Mountain have been gaining rightfully earned attention following the release of its 2013 debut, XO, which was preceded by a standout performance at SXSW months prior. Now, the Canadian indie pop outfit has shared "On My Own," the latest single from the band's sophomore album, Badu (due Sept. 9), exclusively with Billboard.
The track was written in collaboration with chart-topping artist Nelly Furtado and explores the nature of post-partying breakups and fights that often occur publicly. Frontman Ian Bevis approached Furtado last year not only to show her new material of his own, but also in hopes of working on a track together -- an idea she was receptive to.
"It was a great vibe/connection," Furtado tells Billboard.
In terms of lyrical content, "Right away it felt like the song was about an ex-lover," Bevis says. "'I gave it one last cry, I said my last goodbyes.' You've already said goodbye to this person, and you've moved on, but for whatever reason you see them out one night after some time has passed, and they want to hash up the past. You need to say something stern, almost mean to them in order to really let them know they don't get to hurt you anymore, 'You're such a joke.'"
Bevis said Furtado's voice is "undeniable, even iconic in so many ways," and that the process of working together was incredibly easy and organic. Furtado expressed similar sentiments, while also saying Bevis' "raspy but vulnerable vocals" offered great energy on the upbeat track -- despite it's less than bubbly context.
