“I’m totally fine with the gray area,” Tove Lo said in an interview with Rolling Stone about the fake love depicted in the single. “That’s usually where it’s effortless. I can tell that he’s trying to play this game with me, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, go ahead. Do your thing. I’m being chill.’ But then in the bridge, I reveal that’s not what I want. I want to have a fire. I want to feel that.”
"Cool Girl" was inspired by a monologue from Gone Girl, in which -- as Lo describes to Rolling Stone -- “She’s gone full psycho, and she’s sitting there talking about, 'He wanted a cool girl, so I ate pizza. I drank beer. I made a size 2. I didn't give a f--- that he checked out other women.'"

With lyrics like “Let’s not put a label on it/ Let’s keep it fun” and “I wanna be free like you/ I’m a cool girl,” the catchy pop single is rolling its eyes at that "cool girl" image. Lorde has already given her stamp of approval, calling “Cool Girl” the “pop song of the summer.”
