L.A. Dark Synth Pop Duo Pr0files Walk Us Through Debut Album 'Jurassic Technologie': Exclusive Premiere
Billboard first introduced L.A. dark synth pop duo Pr0files -- comprised of Lauren Pardini and Danny Sternbaum -- late last year, with a premiere of the band's Bob Dylan-inspired video for their single "Empty Hands."
For a quick refresher: The group's first collaboration was actually way back in 2008 under Danny's prior project The Boy Traveler, which also featured Skrillex (before he was Skrillex). Then, after splitting off for a brief hiatus, Lauren put work in alongside Purity Ring's Corin Roddick and A$AP Rocky, while Danny focused on his band Baby Monster.
But after reuniting in 2013 -- and dropping a string of buzzworthy singles -- today they return with a spin of their debut album, Jurassic Technologie, premiering exclusively via Billboard. And to fete its release, the band walked us through the record's 11 tracks, offering up an intimate listening session experience to coincide with its debut.
1. EMPTY HANDS
"We wrote this song the day after we released our first song, “Call Yourself a Lover”. It was an emotionally charged and exciting time for us. It’s slow, but has these massive synths and a banging feel."
"It's a piano ballad at heart with a direct message about self-forgiveness juxtaposed with with hard, crunch synth stabs in the production."
3. CALL YOURSELF A LOVER
"The first single we released as Pr0files. It's raw heartbreak that drives this song through and through. One of our favorites to play live."
4. GET IT UP
"A dark-disco dance song. Lyrically it’s about forcing yourself to have a good time when you’re down and out."
5. MISSING YOU TONIGHT
"There’s a very simple message here as 'Missing You Tonight' is the only lyric in the song via vocoder over a bossa nova feel. It touches on a moment of bittersweet reflection."
6. ABUSE U (FEEL IT)
"One of our more romantic songs with a bit of an R&B feel. Contains of ton of background vocals with a bit of a Berlin-esque feel on the bridge with dirty synths & fuzzed out guitars."
7. LIKE A KNIFE
"The song starts with an urgent and foreboding vibe via a thick and hypnotic bass line. The track is filled with various field recordings throughout Los Angeles including Venice Beach and some LAPD helicopters."
"A glitzy, bouncy, dance song all about true love."
9. I KNOW YOU STILL CARE
"The first chorus is swapped for an opera hook and we wanted to do a lot of intricate mo-town style vocals on this. A lot of bloggers describe this as “future-house” which we love."
10. JURASSIC TECHNOLOGIE
"This is the title off of the album. It’s named after a museum in Los Angeles called The Museum of Jurassic Technology. It’s an otherworldly place and that’s the sound we were going for when we created this track with synth swells and rhodes. It’s a bit like a movie score."
11. CHANGING OF THE GUARDS
"The fastest feeling song on the album. The final lyrics are 'if you let it we can be better than others.' It’s got a lot of hope to it. The influences for this were 90's techno and trance."
