Adele stopped smoking cigarettes four years ago because she worried that she would eventually die from the habit, The Daily Mirror reports.

“If I’d carried on smoking I’d probably have died from a smoking-related illness, and I think that’s really bad. If I was dying from lung cancer I would have potentially given it to myself, and that wouldn’t be something I’d be proud of,” Adele says.

The singer had been smoking an average of 25 cigarettes per day when she lost her voice and had to cancel tour dates in 2011, according to the U.K. publication. After she underwent surgery to stop a recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage, doctors warned her that her career would end if she didn’t give up smoking.

“I absolutely loved it, but it's not that f---ing cool when I'm dying from a smoking-related illness and my kid is, like, devastated,” she recently told Rolling Stone.
