Teen star and former Vine phenom Shawn Mendes is readying his debut album after scoring a Top 40 hit with “Life of the Party” earlier this year. Unlike that contemplative track, “Something Big” aims at bringing the self-made 16-year-old to the dance floor, evoking the guitar-inflected R&B vibes of Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” and Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You” before it.

Rap-singing the majority of the song’s verses, Mendes sounds jittery with excitement while proclaiming that “something’s in the air” and that he likes what’s about to happen to his career. It’s no wonder that Mendes is feeling particularly giddy — earlier this week, it was announced that the singer will joined Taylor Swift’s 1989 stadium tour in North America next summer.

“Something Big” is officially at digital retailers as of Friday (Nov. 7), and while there is no announced release date for Mendes’ debut, expected the follow-up to The Shawn Mendes EP to arrive before he sets off on tour with Swift in May. Vance Joy, of “Riptide” fame, will also be a part of those stadium dates.

Until then, Mendes will bring “Something Big” on a truncated tour beginning Nov. 15 in New York City. The Canadian singer-songwriter will then join the Jingle Ball tour on Dec. 5 in Los Angeles.
