Hillary Clinton vs. Bernie Sanders: Who Is Your Favorite Musician Backing?
If we’ve learned anything from the Kanye West 2020 firestorm, it’s that music and politics are a fascinating pair. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves -- we still have the 2016 election to think about.
On Sept. 18, Democrat Bernie Sanders posted a list of notable “artists and cultural leaders” that signed a petition of support for him and his candidacy for president of the United States. The list included actors such as Will Ferrell and Justin Bartha, as well as many notable musicians. So we decided to check out how Bernie’s list compares to the list of people in the music industry who have expressed support for the other Democratic front-runner, Hillary Clinton.
It’s interesting to note that while Bernie’s list is filled with mostly rockers and a few rappers, Hillary has nabbed some of pop’s current biggest stars (yes, even Queen Bey). According to Bloomberg, music mogul L.A. Reid hosted a party in New York City earlier this year featuring a slew of guests, including Beyoncé, Meghan Trainor and Sharon Osbourne. Each guest was reportedly “expected to give $2,700” to Clinton’s campaign.
Sanders’ list of Hollywood supporters has grown so robust that there’s even a Twitter account dedicated to his celebrity supporters. @CelebsForBernie (this account does not seem to be officially affiliated with the Bernie Sanders campaign) currently has 379 followers and counting as it updates on the latest from famous supporters such as Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Silverman, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, and more.
