"As a performer, when you’re on that tour, you better be operating at a high level and doing your best."

Vance Joy sure knows how to get your attention -- and shows it in his brand-new music video for "Fire and the Flood."

The new single comes from Joy's special-edition release of his debut album Dream Your Life Away. The Australian singer's first album peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

In the music video, Joy stares down the camera throughout the entire video as he walks through a destroyed home. A young woman is seen lying around, and later in the video, time rewinds and she is shown destroying the different rooms.

Joy has another new single, "Great Summer," on the Paper Towns soundtrack, which includes music from the movie coming out Friday. The "Riptide" singer was recently nominated for artist to watch at next month's MTV Video Music Awards and is one of the opening acts on Taylor Swift's 1989 world tour.

"[Taylor] just kind of gives everything," Joy told Billboard at a Paper Towns live-streaming event on July 17. "When she performs, her effort is so apparent in terms of [how] she’s singing with passion and conviction. I do that, but she sets the bar pretty high. As a performer, when you’re on that tour, you better be operating at a high level as well and doing your best. That’s the standard."

The 6-foot-3 Aussie said playing to stadiums ranging from 15,000 to 50,000 capacity has been a special experience for him and he's learned a lot from seeing Swift perform.

"I’ve done 20 shows [so far], and they’ve all been really special," Joy said. "The second show I played in Baton Rouge in Louisiana -- I wasn’t sure if it would work, but I wanted to get the crowd to hold up their phones and turn their lights on. That was, like, 15,000 people, and they all did it. I was so nervous before, but I went offstage after it worked, and I was like, ‘This is incredible.’"

Joy's special-edition release of Dream Your Life Away includes two new tracks: "Fire and the Flood" and "Straight Into Your Arms." It is available on Friday.
